NYS EFC Green Innovation Grant Program 2010

GIGP 2010 will provide seed money for projects that will spur green innovation, build green capacity, and facilitate technology transfer throughout the State. Eligible projects shall improve water quality and demonstrate sustainable clean water infrastructure in communities across the State.

Potential Ossining Measures – Energy Sector

Summary: Techniques and best practices designed to decrease electricity demand and heating fuel usage by commercial properties with the objective of reducing the business’s greenhouse gas footprint. This includes usage of energy-efficient appliances, fixtures, and other electricity-using devices as well as measures to reduce heating energy losses to the outdoors.

Detailed Recommendations: Water Resources Sector

Summary: These measures are focused on increasing household and business water conservation and conducting outreach intended to raise awareness of the effects of stormwater runoff on the environment.

Household Recycling Day at FDR State Park

Friday, October 8th, 2010

The next Household Recycling Day will be held Friday, October 15 from 1-3 p.m. and Saturday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at FDR State Park in Yorktown. For a complete and detailed list of what to bring and what’s not accepted, visit www.westchestergov.com/HRD or call 813-5425.

Generally, in addition to chemicals and other special wastes found in a typical household, residents can continue to bring their personal papers for shredding, plastic bags for recycling and unused medications for disposal. They can also bring empty barbecue tanks and Freon-containing appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers.

Pesticides, cleaning products, tires, computers, TVs and old cell phones may be brought in for safe disposal. However, waste from businesses or schools will not be accepted. Paint – whether from residents, businesses or schools – will also not be accepted.

Ossining Organic Community Garden to host 350.org Global Work Party

Fall Clean-Up at the Garden
This Sunday October 10, 2010
12 noon to 3 pm.

Activities will include:
Winterizing the Compost System with members of our compost team.
Creating a New Garden Plot Using the Sheet Mulching Technique with our gardeners & the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Youth Group.
Installing a Rain Barrel with the St. Paul’s Episcopal congregants.
Mulching & Composting with our gardeners.

Bring gloves, shovels & wheelbarrows if you have them.

Come early for a Learning Event with the Master Gardener Volunteers of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County

Closing Shop: Preparing the Garden for Winter.
Final Harvests, plant removal, cover crops & care for overwintering or late season crops will be discussed.
Garlic planting will be demonstrated.
10am – 12noon.
